In Mali, nearly half of families live more than 5 kilometers away from a functional health facility. Most go to a health center only in an emergency. This is why, all too often, malnourished children are identified when their illness is in an advanced stage, necessitating hospitalization.

Dr. Rokia is a pediatrician at the ALIMA’s Dioïla Hospital in the Koulikoro region of Mali. The hospital has a service is dedicated to malnourished children under five and treats more than 2,600 malnourished children a year.

The nutritional service of Dioïla Hospital is a model for the treatment of malnutrition in Mali, and ALIMA runs and training programs to train doctors and nurses from all over the country.
