Hunger

733 million people, or one in eleven, face hunger each year – a number that has risen and plateaued in recent years.

-Enough food is produced to feed every person in the world, but 20% of food is wasted globally, amounting to 1 billion meals a day.

-Globally, one in four children under the age of five suffers from undernutrition, which can lead to long-term damage.

-The number of people living in acute food insecurity has increased by 9% since 2022 and currently stands at a record 281.6 million.

The good news is our charity partners listed below are working to end hunger. Their programs include delivering emergency food supplies in times of crisis, treating the malnourished, training farmers with sustainable agriculture practices and more.

Success Stories

In southeastern Mauritania, Barke waters crops at a farming cooperative that was established in 2008. Ghadima, the name of the farm co-op, means “the old one.” This was one of the most remote assignments Mercy Corps’ Director of Global Photography has had, requiring a full two days of driving across the Sahara Desert to reach the community.   As part of Mercy Corps’ Nafoore program, participants received business and technical training, seeds, and equipment for the farm. Co-op members have seen increased productivity with their range of crops including cowpeas, tomatoes, and eggplants. Mercy Corps programs like Nafoore use a holistic approach that addresses the different, yet interconnected, needs of communities. In Mauritania, participants are not only increasing their own food security through the co-op farm but improving their livelihoods, which help to set up a more stable future for all.
After a fatal car accident that resulted in the death of her husband and son-in-law, Um Alaa struggled to provide for her daughter and three grandchildren. “We rely on the generosity of benefactors and the aid provided at the camp to meet our family’s nutritional needs,” she shared. Not having enough food is a constant struggle for the family of five. “The constant worry about where our next meal will come from creates immense stress and anxiety, affecting our physical and mental well-being.” Thanks to IRUSA donors like you, Um Alaa received a food basket that contained essential food items that can sustain a family for approximately 10-15 days. “This program demonstrates IRUSA’s commitment to supporting vulnerable communities and ensuring access to basic necessities. We are glad that you visited our camp.”
Food For The Poor (FFTP) and the Republic of China (Taiwan) are expanding their collaboration to fight hunger and improve access to health care in Guatemala through two new initiatives: rice shipments to feed vulnerable families and funding for a vital medical project serving rural communities. FFTP and the Republic of China (Taiwan) announced an agreement to distribute 990 metric tons of lifesaving rice to hungry families in Guatemala. The donation, equivalent to 55 tractor-trailer loads or shipping containers, will be delivered monthly beginning this month and continuing through December. The agreement was announced during a ceremony in El Tablón, Guatemala, led by Taiwan’s Ambassador to Guatemala, Vivia Chun-Fei Chang, and attended by officials from FFTP and its partners, Cáritas Arquidiocesana and the Order of Malta. Women from some of the families in Guatemala who will benefit from the rice donation attended the ceremony and expressed their gratitude. FFTP’s partnership…
Gabriel was nearly 3 years old but weighed only 6 pounds. MannaPack® meals saved his life. His grandmother, Imelda, feared the worst as she watched him grow weaker. She was heartbroken. Imelda laid Gabriel on one of her dresses to keep him comfortable; he didn’t look like he would live much longer. Then, Imelda’s friend stopped by, worried about her friend. She told Imelda about African Children Today (ACT), a partner of Feed My Starving Children. She’d heard they could help even very malnourished children. After receiving FMSC food from ACT and eating MannaPack meals for a few months, Gabriel grew to 18 pounds! These meals saved his life
Najmo is a 12-month-old girl living in Makudo’s Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp near the IMC-supported Sefdheer Health Center. During a routine community health visit to the Camp, Najmo was found to be likely suffering from severe acute malnutrition and was admitted to the outpatient therapeutic program (OTP). Over the course of eight weeks, Najmo received close monitoring and weekly supplies of ready-to-use therapeutic food at the Sefdheer Health Center. Gradually, she began showing signs of improvement, and she was discharged from the program after meeting the required criteria for SAM. This meant that she was now ready to begin her treatment for moderate acute malnutrition (NAM), and she was then transferred to the Targeted Supplementary Feeding Program (TSFP).
Four-year-old Abdoul Aziz Coulibaly is the youngest of four siblings, living in a small village in Mali. While his older siblings grew up healthy, Abdoul was regularly in and out of the hospital for various ailments. During the day, Abdoul could see perfectly, but as the sun went down, he would lose most of his vision. Unknown to him, Abdoul was suffering from nyctalopia, or night blindness. Vision loss, frequent infections, and other signs of malnutrition are common among young children who don’t get enough vitamin A in their diets. However, with Helen Keller’s help, children who do not consume sufficient vitamin A through their regular diets receive vitamin A capsules every six months until their fifth birthdays. This simple and inexpensive solution is vital for developing their vision and immune systems. Immediately after Abdoul received his first dose of vitamin A, his parents were stunned at how quickly their…
