Editor’s Note: Unfortunately, the impacts of hurricane season are upon us. Hurricane Helene has devastated the American Southeast, and to support relief and recovery efforts we’ve launched the Hurricane Helene Disaster Relief Fund.

Experts predict this will be one of the most severe hurricane seasons on record. As we brace for potential storms, the urgency to prepare has never been greater. The great news is there’s time for us all to act. Listed below are our charity members that engage in this work and information on how they’re prepared to handle hurricane response. Americares provides health-focused relief during hurricanes, focusing on immediate access to primary health services, mental health support, medicines, and medical supplies. Their response includes providing medicine and medical supplies needed at the time of disaster and beyond, supporting infrastructure needs of health facilities, and increasing access to care. Their long-term recovery programming focuses on mental health and psychosocial needs.

CARE delivers emergency cash, food, shelter and WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) assistance to families and individuals affected by hurricanes. Special emphasis is placed on supporting the most vulnerable, especially women and girls, through gender-sensitive cash and voucher assistance.

Direct Relief’s Hurricane Preparedness Program strategically pre-positions hurricane prep packs and modules near vulnerable areas, ensuring partner facilities have necessary medications and supplies post-storm. They also provide grants and cash to bolster healthcare networks and capabilities of affected communities.

International Medical Corps launches rapid relief efforts in the wake of hurricanes. They pre-position supplies in advance—including hygiene kits, medical supplies, food and clean water—and have a roster of volunteer medical staff who are ready to respond anywhere, anytime. In the months and years following a hurricane, International Medical Corps focuses on training communities to better prepare for disasters in the future, helping them move from relief to self-reliance.

Project HOPE delivers urgent relief that saves lives in the wake of hurricanes and helps impacted communities build backer stronger for the long-term. Working hand-in-hand with health workers and local partners, Project HOPE delivers medicines, medical supplies, equipment, mental health services, and surge support to ensure survivors can access the health services they need. They also work to strengthen health systems long-term through infrastructure repairs, disaster preparedness, and health worker trainings.

Save the Children equips educational organizations and childcare programs with essential preparedness information and critical family supplies like diapers, wipes, cribs, strollers, and hygiene kits to provide immediate assistance. To restore childcare and education swiftly, they distribute emergency cash assistance, supplies, and learning materials, and train childcare professionals. Their social and emotional programs help children cope with disaster-related stress and trauma, while training caregivers to support them.

UNICEF leverages the largest humanitarian supply warehouse in the world and can deliver lifesaving supplies within 48 to 72 hours. Working with local partners, UNICEF provides safe drinking water, hygiene kits, medicine, nutrition, and more. They create child-friendly spaces and temporary classrooms, offering displaced children a safe environment to learn, play, and receive psychosocial support.

World Vision, a global leader in emergency response, provides essential relief items in the wake of a hurricane, such as food, water, hygiene supplies, and clean-up materials, and promotes hygiene practices to prevent deadly disease outbreaks. Their child protection programs address urgent needs like family separation, abuse, and exploitation.
