Opportunity

  • Since 2013, Global Impact has partnered with a global hotel chain to implement many of its philanthropic programs, including establishing various grantmaking programs, its foundation, and its natural disaster response program.
  • In 2022, the client developed an innovative revenue source to fund the expansion of its employee assistance fund (EAF) to cover personal hardship instances. They also needed to find a way to support properties that were offering assistance directly to their employees in the form of food packs and other items needed during crises.
  • The foundational arm had distributed grants to hundreds of nonprofits and community-based organizations that align to its funding priorities and was looking for a partner to continue this grantmaking work to these organizations.

Approach

  • Rebranded the former EAF online campaign platform to a newly branded platform.
  • Consulted the client on the expansion of their EAF program to be able to support team members experiencing personal hardships, in addition to those impacted by natural disasters. Global Impact established new governance for the expanded program and made necessary changes to their application system in order to maintain a smooth transition for applicants.
  • Launched a new form of assistance, which covers expenses made by the client’s properties to procure basic items to support employees impacted by a crisis.
  • Launched and maintained a website for disaster fundraising campaigns and special solicitations.
  • Developed and hosted the platform for the client’s new assistance program to process, respond to, and distribute funding to hotels whose team members were impacted by disasters or major crises.
  • Served as a fiscal sponsor for the assistance fund to receive and disburse funds to team members in need and ensure legal and tax compliance of the program.
  • Developed and hosted an application platform to support the client’s grantmaking program, which collected needed information to vet and ultimately grant out funds to organizations that employees volunteer with. The platform had translation functionality to support organizations globally, and the Global Impact team provided grantee support for completion of the application and receipt of funds.

Results

  • Maintained an 11-year partnership, resulting in more than $4.3 million distributed to support over 9,600 employees in need of disaster, crisis, or personal hardship assistance and over $560,000 distributed to over 2,300 team members via hotel hardship requests.
  • Empowered team members to support co-workers and communities around the world impacted by disasters and charities serving those affected communities, raising $222,000 in team member donations since 2021.
  • Provided the client with quarterly data to support their goal of meaningfully impacting 20 million community members by 2030 with an emphasis around local support, disaster relief, and economic opportunities.
  • Sent over $600,000 in the past two years to seven international grantees.
  • Awarded over $40,000 in grants to over 40 primarily international organizations in celebration of team members’ volunteer efforts during Earth Week and Travel with Purpose Week.
