John de Wet brings over 15 years of financial leadership experience in the nonprofit sector and currently serves as Chief Financial Officer at Rare, a global conservation organization dedicated to inspiring change for the benefit of people and nature.
Before joining Rare, John spent seven years as CFO at Evidence Action, where he led the organization’s finance, operations, IT, legal, and compliance functions, helping scale innovative, cost-effective solutions to reduce poverty worldwide. His career also includes senior leadership roles at Arabella Advisors and Conservation International, where he contributed to advancing global social and environmental initiatives.
John holds a master’s degree in environment and development and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Cape Town. He is also a South African Chartered Accountant. His early career in South Africa focused on investment banking, private equity, and environmental consulting, along with roles at public conservation agencies.
Since moving to the United States in 2011, John has lived primarily in the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area. He recently relocated to North Carolina with his family.
