In mid-July, I attended the Points of Light presentation on The Civic 50: A Roadmap for Good Corporate Citizenship, a program that recognizes the most community-minded companies in the United States.
What is The Civic 50?
The Civic 50 honors companies with annual U.S. revenues of at least $1 billion based on their corporate citizenship and social impact programs. These companies are evaluated across four key dimensions:
- Investment of resources
- Integration across business functions
- Institutionalization through policies and systems
- Impact measurement
We proudly collaborate with many of these Civic 50 companies at Global Impact, helping them engage employees through workplace giving, volunteer opportunities, and employee assistance programs. The recent webinar highlighted how these companies are standing out in their sector and shared highlights from the annual Civic 50 Report:
- Employee Engagement: This year’s Civic 50 saw a rise in external company volunteering participation to 40%, up from 32% in 2022, nearing the pre-COVID high of 43%. Average volunteer hours also increased from 2.9 in 2022 to 4.6 this year.
- Generation Z and Millennials: According to a 2024 Deloitte study, 75% of Gen Zers and millennials consider community engagement and societal impact important when evaluating potential employers.
- Impact on Companies and Communities: Corporate volunteering is becoming a key pathway for positive impact on both communities and companies.
Your company can also be at the forefront of these efforts for your industry, business size, or other metric, and Global Impact is here to help! And remember, these efforts can genuinely reinforce and strengthen the connections between companies and their employees. Here are a few additional takeaways from the webinar around employee satisfaction and company loyalty:
- Significance of Engagement: Companies are recognizing the strategic importance of community involvement for brand loyalty and employee satisfaction.
- Effective Practices: Successful companies encourage employee participation, align initiatives with community needs, and leverage Employee Resource Groups (ERGs).
- Focus on Diversity: A commitment to diversity and inclusion within civic efforts is essential for meaningful community connections.
- Measuring Impact: There is a growing emphasis on assessing the effectiveness of social responsibility programs using data and metrics. Be sure your program is making the impact you planned for, otherwise consider innovating to make it more effective.
The webinar and annual Civic 50 report concluded that companies engaged in civic efforts contribute positively to society while gaining operational advantages. Sharing insights and benchmarks, the Civic 50 webinar aimed to recognize these leaders and inspire other businesses to elevate their civic engagement practices. Want to view the entire webinar?
