Since 2012, #GivingTuesday has been celebrated on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving as an annual day of giving fueled by social media. Following the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday is the official kickoff to the charitable giving season. It unifies nonprofits, corporations, small businesses and individuals from across the globe.

#GivingTuesday has been tremendously successful in raising awareness and publicity for important causes, and has transformed into a vital source of unrestricted funds for charities – in 2017, $274 million was raised.

This year, #GivingTuesday falls on Nov. 27. Here are some ways individuals and organizations can get involved:

Individuals

  • Donate on #GivingTuesday to a charity or cause you care about.
  • Share about your involvement in #GivingTuesday by posting on your social media platforms or writing a blog post. Follow Global Impact on Facebook and Twitter.
  • Motivate your social media community to share their own stories and photos of why and how they give using #GivingTuesday.
  • Encourage friends and family to participate in a day of service – consider hosting a volunteer event everyone can participate in, like a park clean-up.
  • Host a #GivingTuesday donation drive for people to donate goods, clothing and other items for those in need.

Organizations

  • Go social. Share stories, stats, photos and impact statements to show your online followers how your organization plans to change the world for the better on #GivingTuesday.
  • Organize a #GivingTuesday fundraiser or sponsor a giving challenge as a one-day event or the start of a holiday workplace giving campaign.
  • Offer a corporate match for employee dollars raised on #GivingTuesday.
  • Collaborate with other organizations to maximize impact and foster a local #GivingTuesday movement.
  • Donate all or a portion of proceeds on #GivingTuesday to a nonprofit partner whose mission is aligned with your corporate social responsibility program.
  • Hold a volunteer pledge drive. Motivate employees to commit to a certain number of volunteer hours over the next year on #GivingTuesday.
  • Provide a strategic giving option to your team by partnering with Growfund, Global Impact’s no minimum contribution donor-advised fund (DAF) that operates like your own personal foundation.
