World Health Day (April 7) is more than a time to celebrate global health breakthroughs. For those in the health care or pharmaceutical fields, it’s a day to showcase your organization’s cutting-edge expertise and reaffirm your commitment to improving health outcomes for all. With recent funding cuts to major global health programs, corporate support is more vital than ever.
You can show your commitment to advancing public health by kicking off a partnership with a global nonprofit leading the way, like Partners In Health (PIH). PIH’s mission is to provide a preferential option for the poor in health care. They work in countries around the world, including the U.S., to deliver health care to the world’s most impoverished places, empowering local communities to lead the way for their needs.
Whether you work in the health care industry, with global communities, or are simply inspired by their work, your company can team up with PIH to forge an impactful, custom partnership. Working with PIH empowers your workplace to be a real asset for global health while showcasing your company’s skillset, passion, and expertise.
Case Study: Corporate Partners Expand Global Lab Capacity with PIH
Lab services are essential to diagnose conditions, make treatment plans, and avoid antimicrobial resistance (AMR), but access to high-quality lab services is severely lacking in rural areas of low-income countries. Almost half of our global population has limited or no access to key tests that are necessary to diagnose common diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, HIV, or tuberculosis.
PIH has worked with corporate partners to expand diagnostic capacity across their global network of labs, initially in Haiti and Sierra Leone and then in Liberia, Rwanda, Malawi, and Lesotho since 2022. With support from multiple corporate partners, they have:
- Renovated the Biosafety Level 2 lab at Hôpital Universitaire de Mirebalais in Haiti to better support molecular testing, such as polymerase chain reaction testing, which is key to diagnosing and treating infectious diseases.
- Installed new hematology analyzers in Haiti to provide decentralized complete blood count testing, which helps diagnose and treat anemia, diabetes, autoimmune deficiencies, infections, and cancers.
- Created a new microbiology lab in Kono District, Sierra Leone, to provide routine bacterial cultures and antimicrobial drug susceptibility testing — both of which are crucial for monitoring patterns of AMR and emerging patterns of infection.
Together with corporate partners, PIH has also worked to build the capacity of local lab staff through cross-site trainings, mentorship, and peer engagement to strengthen their ability to diagnose, treat, and prevent infectious diseases with safe and effective antimicrobial medicines in Rwanda. A core focus of the project is enhancing microbiology lab capacity in rural settings through semi-automated equipment, improved data management systems, training, and fostering collaboration among lab technicians, clinicians, pharmacists, and researchers.
AMR is a complex global health threat, but PIH partners bring critical expertise and resources to the fight. Together, they’re taking bold steps to overcome the threat of AMR and save lives from preventable infectious diseases.
