When she was 14, Malika visited the rural communities in India where her parents grew up and learned that the level of hygiene she was accustomed to in the United States was not the same around the world. Many people in these communities were unable to afford clean water or sanitation products. After returning to the U.S., Malika and a friend co-founded the HelpHygiene Foundation – a youth-run effort to improve sanitation in at-need communities at home and abroad. They fundraised for water pumps to improve access to clean water in West Bengal. They also collect essential hygiene goods such as toiletries, bedding, and shoes to distribute to communities in India and North Carolina.
