Mobilizing compassion during the Ukraine crisis

Movement of Ukrainians on the border with Romania called Vama Siret.

Opportunity

  • When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the world was stunned by the violence and displacement leveled against millions of civilians. Employers wanted to help employees feel less powerless, and companies were looking for reliable ways to distribute funds to assist those in need. However, many of these organizations lacked the internal programs to respond to this unexpected crisis.
  • Global Impact’s Charity Alliance, comprised of over 80 leading international charities, was ideally positioned to respond. Many were already operating in Ukraine prior to the conflict and all responders have extensive experience in successful emergency response operations.

Approach

  • Launched the Ukraine Response Fund within 48 hours, offering private and public sector employers and their staff a trusted way to contribute during this time of need.
  • Supplied public sector campaigns with the details of responding charities that are enrolled in their campaigns, with campaign-specific details and requirements where necessary.
  • For private sector workplaces, we developed and shared a suite of marketing materials, including photos, impact statements, videos, and stories to engage employees.
  • Effectively promoted the fund to a wide variety of donors through social media, e-newsletters, online, and in other outreach efforts, leveraging our expertise in marketing and fundraising to workplace donors.
  • Managed all of the vetting, distribution, and grantmaking processes needed for the fund, ensuring donations are delivered safely and efficiently.

Results

  • Raised over $2.2 million for 37 responding charities through the fund.
  • Managed and processed significant corporate and foundation donations to the fund, handling the vetting and distribution process on their behalf.
  • Provided workplaces with an effective and meaningful way to support the people of Ukraine. Thousands of employees from over 200 employee giving campaigns contributed to the fund.
