Children International: Perla found her voice and is helping other girls find theirs

Paola Gil / Children International

In many communities, the path for young women is shaped early — and often, it’s filled with obstacles. Girls are expected to stay quiet. To put family needs before their own education. To step into adult responsibilities long before they’re ready. For some, the risk of dropping out of school, early marriage, or limited job opportunities feels less like a possibility and more like an inevitability.

Perla knows this reality well. Growing up, she was shy and unsure of herself, often holding back her thoughts and ideas. Like many girls in her community, she struggled to imagine a future beyond the limitations she saw every day. Confidence didn’t come easily and leadership felt far away.

But that began to change when Perla became involved in Children International’s programs. In a safe, supportive environment, she was encouraged to speak up, build new skills, and believe in her potential. What started as small steps — sharing her ideas in group discussions or helping lead activities — quickly grew into something more. With each experience, Perla’s confidence strengthened.

Today, Perla is no longer the quiet girl standing on the sidelines. She is a leader and mentor, using her voice to uplift other girls who once felt just like she did. She reminds them that they matter, their dreams are worth pursuing, and shows them what’s possible with the right support. Perla’s story is a powerful example of what can happen when girls are given the opportunity to grow. Early support helps build the confidence and skills children need to change the trajectory of their lives.

And when they’re ready to take the next step, just $700 can equip a young adult with job training, work-based learning, and in-demand skills that lead to employment and long-term financial stability. When you invest in a young woman, you invest in her future and in the future of everyone she will go on to inspire.
