AMREF HEALTH AFRICA IN THE USA: Adolescent Motherhood and Resilience in Kampala

Amref Health Africa/Sarah Waiswa

In the northern part of Kampala City, Uganda, sixteen-year-old Sharifa Namtovu and her one-year-old daughter, Nakiganda Chantel, reside in an informal settlement. Sharifa dreams of a better future for her daughter, hoping to shield her from the challenges she herself has faced.

Yet, for many teenage girls like Sharifa, difficult circumstances often threaten their dreams and safety. Structural barriers, limited access to healthcare and education, and the grip of poverty create a daunting reality for those in informal settlements.

During Sharifa’s pregnancy, Teddy Lutayo, an Amref community health volunteer, provided vital support. She ensured Sharifa received proper antenatal care and gifted her an Amref Kokono crib, offering a safe sleeping space for her baby and protection from malaria. Despite the challenges, Sharifa remains hopeful, aspiring for her daughter to break the cycle of poverty by becoming a doctor.

Teenage pregnancy brings a myriad of challenges. Adolescent mothers face increased risks during childbirth, social isolation, and financial struggles, hindering their educational and career opportunities. In many informal settlements, access to sexual and reproductive health services is limited, exacerbating these challenges.

Community health volunteers like Teddy play a crucial role in bridging this gap, providing essential services and support to adolescent girls. With continued support, initiatives can be expanded to train more volunteers and improve the capacity of health centers to offer quality care. Additionally, providing vital support to adolescent mothers can empower them to pursue their aspirations and break the cycle of poverty.

Your support can make a difference, offering hope and opportunity to teenage girls and mothers in need.
