Mercy grew up in Nairobi, Kenya, like so many other girls in her community: Shy, lacking confidence and feeling limited by the social expectations of what women can be or do. But then she discovered boxing, and everything changed. Today, Mercy is a coach and mentor for adolescent girls at Box Girls Kenya — the same organization that helped shape the strong, confident woman she is today. With support from American Jewish World Service, Box Girls runs a gym and community center in Nairobi where girls learn how to defend themselves, take control of their futures, and learn about their sexual health and rights and leadership skills. Box Girls is just one of over 500 social change organizations that AJWS supports in 18 countries around the world, all working to create a better, more equitable world for everyone.
