Helping a multi-generational family establish a framework for philanthropic investment

Opportunity

  • A multi-generational family was looking to scale up their philanthropy, wanting to become more intentional and strategic in their giving rather than simply reacting to ad hoc solicitations for charitable support.
  • Each member of the family had different giving interests and priorities, but they wanted to learn alongside each other and bring the youngest generation into the process to ensure they could continue the family’s charitable commitment into the future.
  • They also wanted to avoid the expense and commitment of establishing a private foundation with full-time staff.

Approach

  • Developed a bespoke framework for identifying areas of potential philanthropic investment within each of their priority issue areas.
  • Conducted extensive research and analysis to tee up prospective organizations and programs that would meet the family’s giving framework criteria.
  • Conducted workshops with the family to explore that analysis, refine potential giving priorities, and flesh out a long list of prospective grantees and partners.
  • Engaged organizations in exploratory conversations on behalf of the family, serving as the family’s staff and program officers.
  • Performed due diligence on short-listed organizations before final funding decisions.

Results

  • Helped each family member recommend (and fund) initial dockets of grantees in their respective issue areas.
  • Codified the family’s customized decision making and analytical frameworks into a “Family Playbook” to allow them to continue giving in the future without needing full-time external support or staff.
  • Assisted the family in placing more than $15 million in grants in their first year of giving as a group.
