WORLD FOOD PROGRAM USA: WFP's work in nutrition

Each month, WFP provides urgent food and nutrition assistance to over 1 million people in Nigeria's north-east states of Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe, including internally displaced persons and members of vulnerable host communities. Poor maternal nutrition, suboptimal infant and young child feeding practices, limited access to diverse nutritious food, and inadequate health services are major underlying causes of child undernutrition in Nigeria. WFP’s nutrition programs focus on the treatment and prevention of all forms of malnutrition. WFP's food intervention in northeast Nigeria includes specialized nutritional assistance to directly treat and prevent malnutrition in children under five. WFP is also supporting pregnant and lactating women with supplementary nutritious food corn soya blend (CSB+) and vegetable oil fortified with vitamin A. WFP currently operates in over 35 health facilities in the region.
