Technology Intern

Reports To: 
IT Manager
Alexandria, VA

The Technology intern will support Global Impact's technology infrastructure by assisting in implementing new solutions to increase efficiency and improve reliability. This may include, but not be limited to upgrading software, configuring hardware, troubleshooting network, server, and desktop issues, and working with end users on various technology issues, as well as creating/updating documentation and training materials.

  • Help to monitor and manage distributed server environment (Windows Server)
  • Assist in setting up and configuring workstations
  • Analyze and document user access permissions among various platforms
  • Provide day-to-day support for various technologies (Windows 7 through 10, Microsoft Office, share drives, printers, network, phones, wireless, etc.)
  • Create and update different system and network documentation
  • Other duties as required
The Intern will report directly to the IT Manager, who will provide daily oversight to ensure all projects are aligned with Global Impact’s mission and strategic goals. The Intern will be invited to present project(s) findings to executive team members that will serve as a capstone for the internship.
  • Student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree (in Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering or related field), currently in sophomore, junior, or senior year
  • Desire to learn about various business/enterprise applications and tools
  • Outstanding attention to detail
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to comfortably work within a Windows 7 and 10 operating system environment
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments, manage strict timelines and adhere to deadlines; strong organizational skills
  • Ability to adapt to changing needs and think critically 
  • Ability to operate independently and in a team environment with little supervision
  • Interest in working for a not-for-profit organization with a global perspective
  • Prior internship or professional experience preferred
  • Mutually agreed by Global Impact and intern
  • Summer 2019 internship will be between mid-May through end of Aug
Note: Global Impact will provide a subsidy up to $90 a month as a transportation benefit.
Learning Objectives
The intern will have a number of learning objectives, among which are:
  • Intern will become proficient in the application and use of Microsoft Office 365, a widely-used team collaboration cloud software platform
  • Intern will gain experience using various business/enterprise software and hardware tools
  • Intern will gain experience in a service center environment, providing support to internal customers
